 •••About Microblading and Microshading

Both microblading and microshading are procedures categorized under permanent makeup, but unlike traditional cosmetic tattooing, it is less invasive and is considered semi-permanent. Microblading and microshading both typically lasts 1-3 years, depending on skin type and skincare routine.  The majority of people get their brows touched up annually.

Pigments used are chosen to match the natural or desired brow color and skin tone will also be taken into consideration. A combination of techniques may be used to achieve the look desired.  When a combination brow is desired, schedule a microshading session.

•••Microblading

Microblading uses a bladed needle to apply pigmentation underneath the skin. The technician fills your brows by making hair-like strokes that look like natural eyebrow hair. The procedure is done by using a hand tool with ultra fine needles and each 'hair' is gently etched into the skin, giving a natural and realistic look. Microblading can dramatically correct or fully reconstruct lost eyebrow and is excellent for those wanting to enhance their brows or who have little to no eyebrows, thinning brows from age or over tweezed brows.

•••Microshading

Microshading is achieved using a tattooing pen which applies pigment underneath the skin. The technician uses this electric pen to create pin-like dots of pigmentation to achieve a powdered eyebrow look. If you are someone who prefers a brow that looks more filled in by pencil or brow powder, microshading may be the look you prefer.

The Microblading and Microshading Process

  • For the first microblading or microshading session, the entire procedure should take about 1.5 to 2 hours. During this session, I will map your brows to the shape and style customized to flatter your face. Once you approve the shape and style, we will follow with pigment selection. Once you are satisfied with all choices, we begin the procedure.

  • The “Perfecting Session”, follow up visit, should be scheduled 4-6 weeks after the initial appointment in order to make any minor necessary touch ups. This appointment typically lasts 1 hour.

  • Day 1 – Brows appear sharp, detailed, slightly red or irritated.

Day 2-4 – Brows become darker and raised as they form a light scab. Color in this phase will appear 40-60% darker than healed result.

Day 5-12 – Scabs naturally exfoliate, peel and flake away over the course of several days. DO NOT PICK. The fresh skin underneath is whitish with a waxy coating. Brows will appear lighter than final result.

Day 10-30 – The color will slowly come back darker as the new skin settles and heals. Wait at least 4 weeks to see the true color. Your second appointment is to fine tune your shape, fill in any areas, touch up any light spots and also to assess how your skin reacts to the process and the chosen color.

*Touch up sessions should not be done earlier than 4 weeks after initial microblading or microshading session as pigment color has not fully settled into the skin. Most importantly, this is to prevent scar damage as the tissue requires time to completely heal.

Things To Know Before Your Appointment

  • • Avoid alcohol and aspirin/ibuprofen and any vitamins that may thin your blood for 72 hours (consult your physician before discontinuing any medications).

    • Avoid tanning so we can assess your natural skin tone.

    • No face scrubs or chemical peels at least two weeks prior.

    • Feel free to come in with brow makeup on so I can see the everyday look you prefer. Reference pictures of shapes and colors of brows are always welcomed. We will then work together to create the perfect brows!

  • • You may shower or bathe, but avoid getting your brows wet. Do not allow the shower to spray directly on your face for 10-14 days (until all the scabs are off) as this can disrupt the bonding process for the pigment to stabilize in the skin.

    • DO NOT pick or scratch at the dry skin/flakiness; let the skin fall off naturally. Picking can cause scarring and the pigment to come off with the scab. Once the flakes have fallen off, a shiny layer of healing skin will cover the hair strokes. Within 1-2 weeks, the hair strokes will slowly reappear at a lighter shade.

    • DO NOT apply make-up to the tattooed area for the first 10-14 days.

    • DO NOT use Vaseline, Neosporin or other petroleum based products while healing.

    • DO NOT bleach, tint or dye the brow area for one month following the procedure.

    • DO NOT apply any anti-acne products (e.g. Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, Proactiv, etc.) or lightening creams such as hydroquinone to the treated area while healing.

    • DO NOT apply facial products containing Alpha Hydroxyls (AHAs), Retin-A, Lactic or Glycolic Acids

    • DO NOT thread, wax, or use hair removal products on brows while healing.

    • NO exercising and/or excessive sweating one day prior to microblading or microshading and for 10 days after. Sweating will cause the hair strokes to blur or push the pigment out.

    • NO sun exposure, swimming pools, jacuzzis, saunas or other bodies of water for two weeks.

    • DO NOT submerge brows in water

 Frequently Asked Questions

  • The pain level for the procedure is considered mild to none.  During the procedure your brow technician will apply a topical anesthetic to numb the area.  Everyone responds differently to anesthetic; depending on the client, the feeling of the procedure has been described as light cat scratches to not feeling anything. Topical anesthetics used may contain lidocaine, prilocaine, benzocaine, tetracaine and epinephrine.

After the procedure, redness and slight swelling in the area is normal.  Clients describe the area feeling similar to a light sunburn.  Clients can take Tylenol but not aspirin or ibuprofen.

  • As with all cosmetic procedures, individuals should not make their choices lightly.  Clients should always do their research, understand the procedure and compare different artists' work and portfolio when making their decisions. As an artist, I do my very best to shape and style the eyebrows to the clients satisfaction prior to the procedure. Every effort will be made to achieve an even appearance, but please realize our faces are never perfectly symmetrical. Uneven appearance can be fixed during the touch up session. Pigment discoloration and color correction can also be fixed during the touch up session. Microbladed and microshaded brows will eventually fade away if no additional touch ups are done.
